The first castle on this site was built in 1080, although the current winding, crenellated version seen today was built in 1830. Considered one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal, it was originally built by the Moors in 713. In 1148, Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, conquered the city and its castle. It underwent a series of transformations, including a renovation around the early part of the 14th century. By the 20th-century, it was in ruins, but the government repaired it, retaining much of its unique medieval design and turned it into one of the nation's finest hotels.
